A friend of mine who is keen on restoring these vintage aircraft radio receivers needed a replacement mixer coil. He asked if I could help. This was quite a challenge because one of the two coils was wave wound. I had a look on the web to see what was available in coil winding machines but found that what was available was either not suitable or too expensive. I set about sketching a few ideas and then remembered there was a big case of Meccano in the attic. This was there from my boyhood days because I never throw anything away. For those who don't know, Meccano was a toy construction set manufactured by Hornby. More on this later. Various measurements were made on a good coil removed from another set using a Marconi bridge and an MFJ analyser.
